Hoover Housing

In an effort to resist the formulaic repetition of multiple-dwelling speculative development, the design for Hoover Street Housing attempts to provide the amenities of single family living within a dense communal structure. The primary challenge was to situate four dwelling units and nine parking spaces within an atypical hillside parcel, while still providing privacy, views and considerable natural light.

Above the parking level is a three-story framed structure with four units, each of which is entered from a collective “porch”. While this space is inherently urban, it is also the departure point for the individual dwelling units. Within each unit autonomy is defined spatially through various interior configurations and unique exposures to the natural environment. Views toward the ocean, the hills and the sprawling city are provided to each unit with a minimum of three exposures. In addition, private outdoor spaces, separated by building orientation and the sectional nature of the hillside are provided for each unit.
